Glossary

COA or COE:
Cost of Attendance or Education

Default:
Failure to repay a student loan according to the terms agreed to when the promissory note was signed by the student.

EFC:
Expected Family Contribution

FAFSA:
Free Application for Federal Student Aid

FAN:
Financial Aid Notification, an award letter mailed to you from the Office of Student Financial Aid outlining your financial aid awards

FAT:
Financial Aid Transcript (which is separate from an academic transcript) 1040, 1040A, 1040EZ - Federal tax return forms

Financial Aid Package:
The total amount of financial aid the student receives

FWS:
Federal Work-Study

Grant:
Monies provided by the federal government to assist students pursuing their first bachelor's degree. These funds are not loans thus do not have to be paid back once the student graduates. Pell and SEOG are types of Grants.

NDSL:
Federal Perkins loan, formerly called NDSL (National Direct Student Loan)

Pell:
Federal Grant

SEOG:
Federal Student Educational Opportunity Grant

SAR:
Student Aid Report, sent to you by the federal processing center as a result of your completed FAFSA
